Your Kahramaa meter is a free leak detector

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and almost nobody in Doha is told it.

Turn off every tap, appliance and water outlet in the property. Note the reading on your Kahramaa water meter. Wait thirty minutes and use no water at all. Read it again.

If the reading has moved, you have a leak. It is that simple. A concealed leak often shows up on the meter and on your Kahramaa bill long before it shows up as a damp patch on a wall — and by the time you can see the damp, the repair is much more expensive. If your bill has jumped without any change in how you use water, run the meter test before you do anything else.

Desalinated water is hard on fittings and heaters

Qatar's mains supply is largely desalinated and treated. Combined with very high temperatures, that accelerates scale and sediment build-up inside water heaters, mixer cartridges and shower heads.

Practically, that means a mixer tap that would last years elsewhere starts dripping sooner here, and a water heater that is never flushed loses efficiency and eventually fails early. Flushing the heater periodically matters more in Doha than in a temperate climate, and it is cheap compared with replacing the unit.

The cold tap runs hot in summer, and that is not a fault

In most Doha properties the cold water tank sits on the roof, in direct sun. In peak summer the water inside it heats up, so the cold tap delivers hot water for the first stretch of the day.

People call this in as a plumbing fault regularly. It is not one. Insulating or shading the tank, or fitting a tank cooling arrangement, is what actually addresses it. Anyone who quotes you a pipe repair for this has not understood the problem.

Villas and towers fail in different places

In a villa, the common calls are roof tank and pump problems, outdoor pipework that has taken sun and heat, and drainage runs to the boundary.

In an apartment or tower, it is concealed pipework inside walls, shared risers, and the fact that your leak is often somebody else's ceiling. If water is appearing in a flat below yours, tell the building management at the same time as you call a plumber — the shared parts of the system may not be your responsibility to fix.

Renting? Check who pays before you book

As a general rule the landlord covers wear-and-tear failures — an aged water heater, a corroded pipe, a worn mixer cartridge. The tenant covers damage they caused, such as a blockage from what went down the drain.

The tenancy contract governs, and many Qatar leases set a small-repair threshold below which the tenant pays. Photograph the fault, get a written quote, and send it to the landlord or agent before booking. We format quotes so they can be forwarded — say so when you call.
