Quick Answer: A standard cylinder lock in Doha costs QAR 75–200 for the hardware. A deadbolt is QAR 200–600. A mortise lock for a main entrance runs QAR 500–1,500. Smart locks sit at QAR 480–1,400 for something worth fitting.

Fitting is charged on top, and it depends far more on your door than your lock. An aluminium or glass door takes longer than a wooden one because the lock has to fit a narrow stile with almost no material to work with.

The single most useful question to ask any locksmith in Doha: what is the hardware and what is the labour? Almost nobody here separates the two, which is exactly how a QAR 200 lock ends up on a QAR 700 invoice.

For a price on your specific door, send a photo of the door edge and the existing lock to +974 7446 9660. The door type tells us more than the lock does.

First: What Kind of Door Do You Actually Have?

This decides everything, and it is the part every other lock page in Doha skips straight past.

Solid wooden door — villa main entrance, bedroom doors

Plenty of material to cut into. Takes a mortise lock, which is the most secure option because the whole lock body sits inside the door rather than bolted through it. Also the most expensive to fit, because a mortise pocket has to be cut accurately.

If you have a solid wooden main door and a cheap cylindrical knob lock on it, you are wasting the door.

Aluminium door — apartment entrances, balcony doors, offices

Very common in Doha towers and newer builds. The frame is a narrow stile, meaning there is only a few centimetres of aluminium to work with. Standard mortise locks do not fit. You need a narrow-stile mortise or a purpose-made aluminium lock body.

This is the door type where people get it wrong most often — a lock is forced in, the stile is weakened, and the door starts binding within a year.

Glass door — shopfronts, office partitions, some balconies

Nothing can be cut. The lock has to work with the existing patch fitting or clamp. Options are limited and specific. There are smart locks made for glass doors in Qatar (typically QAR 550–650), but a standard door lock cannot be adapted.

Hollow-core internal door — bedrooms, bathrooms

Light, cheap, and there is not much inside. A basic cylindrical or tubular lock is the right answer. Fitting a heavy security lock to a hollow-core door is pointless — the door will fail long before the lock does.

What Locks Actually Cost in Doha

Hardware prices below reflect what these lock types sell for in the Qatar market. Fitting is separate and is what most quotes hide.

Lock type Hardware (QAR) Our fitting (QAR) Time
Site check and written quote — Free 20 min
Cylinder only (replace the barrel) 30 – 120 80 – 150 30 min
Cylindrical / knob lock 75 – 200 100 – 200 45 min
Lever handle lock 150 – 400 120 – 250 45 min
Deadbolt 200 – 600 150 – 300 1 hr
Mortise lock (wooden door) 500 – 1,500+ 250 – 500 1–2 hrs
Narrow-stile aluminium lock 250 – 700 250 – 500 1–2 hrs
Smart lock — budget 150 – 350 150 – 300 1 hr
Smart lock — mid 480 – 900 200 – 400 1–2 hrs
Smart lock — premium (face/palm, camera) 900 – 1,600 250 – 500 1–2 hrs
Glass door smart lock 550 – 650 300 – 600 2–3 hrs
Door closer 30 – 250 100 – 200 45 min
Emergency lockout — non-destructive entry — 150 – 350 Same visit
After-hours / weekend callout — +50 – 150 surcharge —

Two examples of what that means all-in. A standard mortise lock on a wooden villa door, mid-range hardware plus fitting, usually lands between QAR 750 and QAR 1,300. A mid-range smart lock on a standard wooden apartment door comes to roughly QAR 700 – 1,200 including fitting. Both get quoted in writing before we start.

Fitting your own hardware is fine — you pay the fitting column only.

For comparison, locksmiths advertising aluminium door lock work in Qatar quote roughly QAR 150–500 for simple repairs, QAR 400–1,000 for a lock replacement, and QAR 700–2,000 for high-tech locks — but those are blended figures with hardware and labour rolled together. Split them before you compare.

What makes fitting cost more:

  • Aluminium or glass door rather than wood
  • No existing pocket — a new mortise has to be cut
  • The old lock has seized and has to be drilled out
  • Door has dropped and needs realigning before the new lock will meet the strike plate
  • After-hours or emergency

That last-but-one point matters. If the bolt is not meeting the strike plate, a new lock changes nothing. If a quote for a “stiff lock” does not mention checking the alignment, nothing has been diagnosed. That is a door repair problem, not a lock problem.

Smart Locks in Doha: The Part Nobody Writes Down

Smart lock pages in Qatar list features and prices. Almost none of them mention what a Doha summer does to one.

Heat kills batteries faster than the spec sheet says

Manufacturers advertise 8-month to 1-year battery life. Those figures come from testing at mild ambient temperatures. A lock mounted on a metal or dark-coloured door that catches direct sun in Doha runs far hotter than that, and lithium and alkaline cells both lose capacity as temperature climbs.

Practically: expect noticeably shorter battery life than the box claims, and treat the low-battery warning as urgent rather than a suggestion. Every decent smart lock has an emergency power option — usually a USB-C or micro-USB contact on the outside face that lets you power it from a phone power bank long enough to open the door. Find out where yours is before you need it.

Where the lock sits matters more than which one you buy

A smart lock on an internal apartment door in an air-conditioned corridor will be fine. The same lock on a villa main door facing west, in direct afternoon sun, is a different job.

Check the IP rating if the lock is exposed. IP53 handles dust and light splashes; it is not a rating for sitting in blowing sand and direct sun year round. Recessed doorways and shaded entrances are much kinder to electronics.

Fingerprint readers and Doha dust

Fine dust settles on the sensor and read rates drop. It is not a fault, it is the environment. Wiping the sensor occasionally solves most of it. If you have a household where several people will use it, register more than one finger per person — it saves a lot of frustration.

Buying online: two things that catch people out

Wi-Fi band. Most smart locks connect only to 2.4 GHz. If your router broadcasts a single combined 2.4/5 GHz network, the lock may refuse to pair. You often have to split the bands temporarily during setup.

Gateway and regional version. Some models need a separate bridge or hub to work remotely, sold separately. Some listings are non-GCC versions. Check for “GCC version” and check whether a gateway is included before you buy, not after.

The honest trade-off

Traditional lock Smart lock
Hardware cost QAR 75 – 600 QAR 480 – 1,600
Keys Physical, copyable Fingerprint, code, app, card
Guest access Cut another key Temporary code, revoked after
Power None needed Battery — needs replacing
Fails when Mechanism wears Battery dies, sensor dirty
Backup Spare key Physical key + emergency power port

Neither is simply better. A smart lock is genuinely useful for a household where people forget keys, for short-let apartments, or where you want to give a cleaner access without handing over a key. A well-made mortise lock on a solid door is still the higher security option, and it never needs charging.

Renting in Qatar: Before You Change the Lock

Another question people search and almost nobody answers on a Doha locksmith page.

Ask the landlord or agent first. The lock is a fixture. Changing it without telling anyone is the kind of thing that turns into an argument at handover, even when your reason was perfectly good.

Keep the original. If you swap a lock, keep the old one and its keys in a bag. At the end of the tenancy you can refit it and take your smart lock with you — which is worth doing, since you paid several hundred riyals for it.

Compounds and towers often have rules. Some buildings run a master key or master cylinder system so that building management or security can access units in an emergency. Fitting a lock that breaks that system can get you asked to reverse it. Check with building management before ordering anything for a main entrance in a managed building.

Who pays? A lock that has worn out with age is normally the landlord’s. A lock changed because you lost the keys, or upgraded by choice, is normally yours. Get any quote in writing before booking — it settles the question much faster than a phone conversation.

This is practical guidance based on how these situations usually play out in Doha, not legal advice. Tenancy terms vary and your contract governs — read the maintenance and fixtures clauses before you change anything.

Locked Out: What Actually Happens

The highest-urgency search in this category, and the one with the least honest information behind it.

Non-destructive entry first. A competent locksmith tries to open the lock without damaging it — picking, bypass, or through the latch. If that works, you pay for the callout and nothing else. Your lock survives.

Drilling is the last resort, not the first move. Drilling destroys the cylinder, which means you are then buying a new lock as well as paying the callout. Some operators reach for the drill immediately because it is faster and it sells hardware.

Ask before they start: will you try to open it without damage first? The answer tells you a lot.

Two things that make lockouts worse:

  • Trying to force it yourself. A credit card on a modern deadbolt does nothing except damage the door edge, and now you are paying for door repair too.
  • Calling whoever answers first. In a lockout you are in a weak negotiating position. Agree the callout charge on the phone, before anyone drives over.

Prevention that actually works: leave a spare with someone you trust nearby, not under a mat. If you have a smart lock, set a backup code for someone in the building. If you have a mortise lock on a villa door, know where the spare key is before the door closes behind you.

Choosing a Lock That Is Worth the Money

Four things worth checking, none of which appear on a typical Doha product listing.

Look for a grade or standard marking. Better locks carry a recognised grade stamp. An unmarked lock with no brand and no standard reference is a gamble regardless of what it looks like.

Check the cylinder, not the handle. The handle is cosmetic. The cylinder is the security. A beautiful handle set with a cheap cylinder is a cheap lock.

Match the backset and mortise size before ordering. Locks are sold in standard mortise sizes — 6068 is the common one on smart locks. Order the wrong size and it will not fit your door, and returning hardware in Qatar is rarely quick.

On a main door, ask what happens when the power or battery is gone. Every smart lock worth fitting has a mechanical key override or an external emergency power contact. If a lock has neither, do not put it on the only door into your home.

Where We Fit In

We fit locks supplied by us or supplied by you. If you have already bought a smart lock online and it is sitting in a box because the mortise size does not match your door, that is a normal call for us — send a photo of the box and a photo of your door edge and we will tell you whether it will go in before we come out.

For anything beyond the lock — the door itself sticking, a frame that has moved, a door that needs replacing — see door repair in Doha or our door installation and repair service. Locks, doors, wardrobes, and fitted units all run through the same carpenter services team.

If the lock is electronic and the fault is power rather than mechanism — a keypad that has gone dead on a mains-powered unit, or a magnetic lock that will not release — that is usually a supply problem and belongs with electrical services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does door lock installation cost in Doha?

The hardware and the fitting are two different numbers. Hardware runs from QAR 75 for a basic cylindrical lock to QAR 500–1,500 for a mortise lock, with smart locks at QAR 480–1,400 for a model worth fitting. Fitting is charged separately and depends mainly on the door — aluminium and glass doors take longer than wood. Ask any locksmith to split the two figures.

Which lock is right for an aluminium door in Qatar?

A narrow-stile mortise lock or a purpose-made aluminium lock body. A standard mortise lock does not fit — there is only a few centimetres of stile to work with, and forcing a standard lock in weakens the door. Aluminium doors are very common in Doha apartments, and this is the mistake we are called out to correct most often.

Do smart locks work in Doha’s heat?

They work, but battery life is shorter than the advertised figure, especially on a door in direct sun. Check the IP rating if the lock is exposed, keep the fingerprint sensor clean of dust, and find the emergency power contact before you need it. A shaded or recessed doorway is much easier on the electronics.

Can I install a smart lock myself?

Many are designed for standard door thickness and go in reasonably easily on a wooden door. Two things trip people up: the mortise size has to match (6068 is common but not universal), and most locks pair only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. On an aluminium, glass, or fire-rated door, get it fitted.
