Which Curtain Fabric Survives Doha Sun?
A south or west-facing window in Doha can fade a cheap curtain in one summer. This is what we recommend, and why.
Polyester and poly-blends
Hold colour far longer than cotton in strong sun and don’t shrink much in humid months. Our default for sun-facing windows.
3-pass blackout
A black core between two layers blocks light without the chalky feel of coated blackout. Hold a sample up to the window at the visit and you’ll see the difference.
Sheer voile
Cuts glare and gives daytime privacy while keeping the room bright. Works best as the front layer of a double track, with blackout behind.
Lining
A lining takes the UV instead of your face fabric, adds body and makes curtains last noticeably longer. Worth it on any window that gets afternoon sun.
Velvet and heavy fabrics
Rich for majlis and formal rooms, but heavy. They need a strong track fixed into concrete, and dust shows, so plan for cleaning.
Fabrics to avoid on sunny windows
Unlined cotton, silk and dark colours fade fastest here. If you love them, use them on north-facing windows or add a lining and a sheer in front.
Measuring & Fitting
What We Check Before Making Your Curtains
Most curtain complaints in Doha trace back to measuring or fixing, not stitching. These are the checks we do at every free visit.
- Track width, not glass width. We add about 15–20 cm on each side so the curtain covers the frame and stops light leaking at the edges when closed.
- Drop to the floor. Floor-length curtains finish about 1 cm above the floor so they don’t drag and collect dust. We measure at three points because Doha floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level.
- What the ceiling is made of. Gypsum false ceilings can’t hold a curtain track alone. We fix into the concrete slab, into timber backing, or build a curtain box.
- AC units and vents. A split unit or supply grille close to the window needs clearance so the curtain doesn’t block airflow or sway every time the AC runs.
- Handles and sliding doors. We check the curtain clears window handles and balcony door tracks so it opens and closes without catching.
- Our measurement, our responsibility. Because we measure, if a curtain comes out short or narrow, we remake it. That’s the main reason to let us measure instead of sending sizes.

Sheer curtains typically run QAR 60 to 120 per metre, blackout QAR 90 to 180 per metre, and a double layer of sheer plus blackout QAR 150 to 280 per metre. A track adds QAR 30 to 70 per metre. As an example, a 2.4 metre bedroom window with a double layer at around QAR 200 per metre plus a standard track comes to roughly QAR 600 fitted. Usually 3 to 7 days from measurement to installation. Plain sheer and blackout panels are at the quicker end, lined, pleated or wave curtains for a full villa take longer. If a motorised track or a special fabric has to be ordered, allow up to 10 days. Fitting itself takes about 1 to 3 hours for an apartment and 2 to 4 hours for a villa.
For windows facing south or west, choose a polyester or poly-blend face fabric with a lining. Polyester holds its colour far longer than cotton or silk in Doha sunlight, and the lining takes the UV instead of the face fabric. Use 3-pass blackout in bedrooms and a sheer front layer in living rooms so you cut glare without living in the dark. Unlined cotton, silk and dark colours fade fastest here.
Pinch pleat curtains are gathered into fixed pleats at the top and hang in a classic, formal way that suits villas and majlis rooms. Wave curtains run on a special track with carriers that hold the fabric in even, continuous S-shaped folds, giving a cleaner modern look that stacks neatly when open. Wave needs a wave track, pinch pleat works on most standard tracks.
Yes, but not by screwing into the gypsum board alone. That is the most common reason curtain rails fall in Doha flats. We fix into the concrete slab above, into timber backing inside the ceiling, or build a curtain box so the track is carried by something solid, especially for heavy blackout or velvet curtains.
