What builds up inside a sink pipe
A sink pipe rarely blocks in one day. It closes layer by layer, from four sources.
Oil and fat
Warm oil looks liquid, then cools and sets on the pipe wall within the first metre. Ghee and meat fat set fastest.
Food and starch
Rice grains, flour and dough stick to the grease layer and swell with water, so the opening shrinks faster.
Soap and detergent
Soap binds with fat into a hard, waxy lining that hot water alone does not shift.
Hair and toothpaste
In a bathroom basin, hair wraps around the plug and toothpaste coats the trap, so the basin slows down month by month.

What happens when it is left
The pipe under the sink does not only block. The grease and food caught in it start to rot, and that is what most people notice first.

Food rotting in the trap and the grease lining gives off a sour, sewage-like smell, worst in the morning and on hot days.
Drain flies
The small grey flies that sit on the wall near the sink breed in the slimy film inside the pipe. Spray kills the adults, but they keep coming back until the film is cleaned out.
Cockroaches
Food waste and damp under the sink draw cockroaches, and the gap where the pipe meets the wall gives them a way in.
A full blockage
When the opening finally closes, the sink fills and stays full, and water can leak from the trap joints into the cabinet.

Before you call: what you can safely try
A clogged sink, or a kitchen sink blocked with grease that has not set hard yet, sometimes clears without a plumber. These steps are safe on the plastic pipes in most Doha kitchens.
Try this first
- Use a plunger with the overflow hole covered by a wet cloth, so the pressure goes down the pipe.
- Pour a kettle of hot, not boiling, water with a squeeze of dish soap, then wait five minutes.
- Put a bucket under the trap, unscrew it by hand, and empty it. Most blockages sit right there.
Skip caustic drain cleaners. They rarely shift a grease plug and leave the pipe dangerous to open. Our drain cleaning page explains why.

Can I clear grease with hot water or drain cleaner myself?
Hot tap water with dish soap can loosen a fresh, soft layer. Boiling water can soften plastic pipe joints, and caustic drain cleaner rarely shifts set grease. Once the sink blocks completely, the trap and pipe need opening.
